September 7, 2023: Carlos Transfers to Miami

On September 8, 2023, SA Carlos Valles began the transfer process to the Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center located in Miami, FL.  Carlos was flown from New Orleans, LA by Global Transport/REVA via an equipped medical transport plane to Miami, FL, where he was admitted under the care of Kevin Dalal MD.  Dr. Dalal is the director of the Center and Carlos’s personal doctor as well, so we are very fortunate.

Due to the extent of Carlos's spinal cord injury at his C-6 /C-7 vertebrates, the Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center located at UHealth/Jackson Memorial, was his choice for treatment due to its award winning and innovative treatment plans, it’s partnership with the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and the AMAZING opportunity to be early enrolled in clinical trials of a spinal cord nerve transplant study.

Carlos is accompanied by his family and ATF Agents who also arrived in Miami, FL yesterday and will remain supporting him throughout inpatient, outpatient, and clinical studies.  Carlos and his family were escorted throughout the entire trip by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in LA and the Miami-Dade Police Department and arms/Fire in FL.  If you have never been part of an escorted motorcade, it is a humbling and extraordinary experience.  Carlos and the family have the upmost respect and gratitude for all the officers who showed them so much love and support.  Thank you all!

Carlos and the family cannot express the appreciation they have for the care he received at UMC New Orleans ER, ICU staff, the ATF New Orleans Field Division, and those Agents and Task Force Officers across the nation who were present or afar who encouraged him daily to stay in the fight!

Carlos and family want to thank Dr. Berje Shammassian who was Carlos’ Neurosurgeon. “Dr. B” was an integral part, not only in Carlos’ already amazing start towards recovery, but also in the opportunity to participate in the clinical study.   “Dr. B” treated Carlos and his family as if they were his own and he will forever be a part of the Valles and ATF family!

Finally and most importantly, Carlos is in great spirits and is motivated to start his road to recovery.  At the Lynn Rehab Center, Carlos’ level of progression starts on the 6th floor and with each level of advancement, he will move closer and closer to the first floor where the ultimate goal is for him to walk out the front door; however, this is Carlos, so he will be running out the front door!  The staff here has been amazing and are treating Carlos and his family with the same love and support he has received from all of you.  Carlos is in very good hands.

There are so many people to thank for getting Carlos this far to include everyone at ATF, the National Police Defense Fund, FLEOA, Dr. Josephson, all his doctors, nurses, friends, family, and the law enforcement community.

Please continue to send your love, support, and prayers to our ATF brother!
